Remote work in South Africa didn’t end when the pandemic did. According to Discovery Insure data, 23% of workers who began working from home during Covid are still not back in the office full-time. Pnet’s Job Market Trends Report shows that remote job opportunities are once again rising after a dip in 2023–2024, with hybrid models firmly embedded across IT, finance, management, and administration roles. 

South Africa has even been ranked as the world’s 4th most popular digital nomad destination, and across Africa, 42% of the workforce engages in remote work for at least one day per week. 

The demand is there. The question for SMBs isn’t whether they need remote access — it’s whether they can afford it. 

For most, the answer has been no. Enterprise remote desktop solutions like Citrix carry price tags that assume enterprise budgets. Microsoft’s own RDS stack requires layered licensing that can cost R100,000+ before you’ve bought any server hardware (as we detailed in Article 7). And cobbling together consumer-grade tools like TeamViewer or AnyDesk doesn’t deliver the multi-user, application-publishing capabilities a business actually needs.

The accounting firm. Fifteen staff running Sage, Pastel, or Xero alongside Microsoft Office.
